About Us

Our philosophy at the Animal Activity Center is one of a "POSITIVE" approach.

We know this sounds foreign or different to many people, so let us explain. There are a multitude of ways to offer and participate in training of an animal. The range of techniques is wide and we know that there are several "positive" and alternative ways to treat and train animals other than using traditional methods that employ negative interaction. Positive, not permissive, is what we ARE about. Whether your needs are for Boarding, Daycare, Training (private lessons or group classes), or Grooming - we stress positive approach and safety in a fun & happy environment.

The 'Positive' Approach

Why are we so "Gung-Ho" on the Positive Approach? For a long time there was only one way to train, but a lot of different locations. Now, people have a better understanding of "Positive" training and its benefits. Times are really changing and people are realizing that physical force and coercion are not needed to communicate with an animal. Alpha rollovers, scruff shakes, chin slaps, nose flicks and ear pinches are FINALLY becoming a thing of the past. Sometimes to get into a more positive mindset we just need to change our verbal language. Using words like master, command, alpha, dominant, and obedient can lead to a negative thinking pattern. Words like behavior, signal, and cue are non-threatening and open the way for learning. Positively trained animals are much happier and much more likely to offer correct behaviors than the traditionally trained animals. The animals are not the only ones who benefit by the positive approach. The owners also have a better relationship with the animals and more enjoy training their pets, as they know in their heart this pet is being treated with love and respect.

In keeping with the philosophy of the AAC, we do NOT allow choke, pinch, or electronic collars in the training classes or throughout the building at any time. For training classes: buckle collars, gentle leaders, or head haltis can all be used. This allows us to maintain a positive experience for you and your pet. In the AAC you will never see anyone correct a dog by hitting, squirting/ spraying, or pulling them. You will see them urging dogs to listen by using positive approaches such as rewarding them with different treats and praises. "Positive" does not mean "Permissive," and although we are an all positive facility, we still need to communicate to an animal when they have made a mistake. In order to do that we use either, or both, voice and body language in an appropriate tone so that the pet understands that this behavior is unacceptable.

This technique works and those who employ it are thrilled with the results. We, at the AAC, certainly feel that it is the utmost humane, safe, loving and caring way to interact with your pets, so that they feel they are a member of your and our family.

Safety

Here at the AAC, SAFETY is our #1 priority for all our guests. The time has come for a place such as this in which you can bring your pet and know that he/she will have the best care possible, as if you were taking care of them yourself. The staff goes through a training program that encompasses skill training in animal behavior, husbandry, and care of all animals that we see. They are trained to understand appropriate safety techniques to avoid injury to the pets as well as themselves; and, most importantly, they are hired for their caring and compassion of all animals and must have a willingness and desire to care for the pets in accordance with our philosophy.

Fun and Happy Environment

This is the type of place you could only dream about until now! Anything you would like to bring to make our guests' stay "A home away from home"-you got it. You may add to your pet's experience by bringing: beds, food, treats, toys, snacks, blankets…etc. Or use ours… Your "kids" or "our guests" will be watched and taken care of as if they were our very own. They will be fed at the times given by you, taken potty at your designated times, and played with one-on-one if you choose to receive playroom or extra walks for them. You may also have the option to put your "kid" into Daycare or even Townhall if they have been evaluated and found to be compatible with other dogs. After all, dog socialization is great and builds self-esteem, initiates exercise for your pet, and provides companionship.

In closing, if you have not come in to visit or taken a tour of the facility yet, what are you waiting for? Stop on in today and see what we are all about!
